MARY ANNE TESORO
As a high school counselor, my role involves supporting students through academic, social, emotional, and personal challenges. Every day, I listen to students' concerns, help them navigate difficult situations, and encourage them to make decisions about their future. While I find this work meaningful and fulfilling, I also recognize that it can be emotionally and mentally demanding.
To maintain my well-being, I make time for activities that help me recharge and reconnect with the people who matter most. One of my favorite forms of self-care is traveling. Whether it is a short weekend trip or a longer vacation, traveling allows me to step away from my daily responsibilities, experience new places, and gain fresh perspectives. These experiences help me return to work feeling refreshed and energized.
I also enjoy eating out with friends. Sharing good food, laughter, and meaningful conversations provides an opportunity to relax and de-stress. Spending quality time with friends reminds me of the importance of maintaining relationships and creating joyful moments outside of work. In addition, I cherish the time I spend with my nieces. Being part of their lives brings me happiness and serves as a reminder to appreciate life's simple and meaningful moments.
One of my strengths is that I intentionally create opportunities to disconnect from work and engage in activities that support my emotional well-being. I value relationships and understand the importance of maintaining a healthy balance between my professional and personal life. Traveling and spending time with loved ones help me stay grounded and resilient, especially during busy times of the school year.
However, there are still areas where I can improve. Like many helping professionals, I sometimes focus so much on supporting others that I neglect my own needs. There are occasions when I carry students' concerns home with me or spend too much time thinking about work-related responsibilities. I would like to become more consistent in setting boundaries, prioritizing rest, and incorporating regular physical activity into my routine.
Reflecting on my wellness journey reminds me that self-care is not a one-time activity but a continuous commitment. By taking care of my own physical, emotional, and mental well-being, I am better equipped to support my students, nurture my relationships, and continue finding fulfillment in both my personal and professional life.
